Thailand has introduced tax incentives to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in digital technology. On 2 October 2026, the Revenue Department published Director-General's Notification No. 469 under Royal Decree No. 802 B.E. 2569, establishing conditions for corporate income tax incentives covering software, hardware, smart devices, and digital services.

The key benefit is an additional corporate income tax exemption equal to 100% of qualifying expenditure, capped at THB 300,000 per accounting period. Together with ordinary tax deductions or depreciation, eligible investments may receive tax benefits equivalent to 200% of their cost over the applicable deduction periods. However, the incentive is limited to companies with paid-up capital not exceeding THB 5 million and annual revenue from sales and services not exceeding THB 30 million.

Qualifying expenditure may include accounting software, enterprise management systems, data analytics applications, smart devices, cloud services, and other eligible digital solutions. AI-related software may also qualify if it meets the regulatory requirements.

However, not every technology purchase is eligible. Annual maintenance fees, unrelated expenses, and computers not approved under the relevant registration requirements are excluded.

An important condition is that the products or services must be registered with the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa) before purchase or use. The technology must also be developed in Thailand and used for business management purposes. The incentive applies to qualifying expenditure within the prescribed period from 24 June 2025 to 31 December 2027, subject to the detailed rules.

From an accounting perspective, CFOs should distinguish between capital expenditure and operating expenses. Purchased software may be recognized as an intangible asset and depreciated or amortized for tax purposes, while subscription fees may qualify as operating expenses. The additional tax benefit must be calculated separately, without duplicating other tax incentives.

Companies should maintain purchase agreements, invoices, payment records, depa registration evidence, and supporting reports describing the technology, its business application, and the date it became ready for use. These documents are important for corporate income tax compliance and future tax audits.

In summary, the new incentive provides eligible SMEs with an opportunity to reduce tax costs while improving operational efficiency. For CFOs, the priority is to verify eligibility before approving technology investments, rather than discovering potential tax benefits after the expenditure has already been incurred.
