Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in financial reporting and auditing to analyse large volumes of transactions, identify unusual journal entries, review contracts, evaluate financial forecasts and detect potential fraud indicators. These capabilities offer opportunities to improve audit efficiency and risk identification. However, AI can also generate inaccurate conclusions, misinterpret accounting information or produce convincing explanations unsupported by reliable evidence. The central question for auditors is therefore not whether AI should be used, but how its results should be challenged while maintaining professional skepticism.

In October 2024, the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) issued its Technology Position, supporting the appropriate use of technology to enhance audit quality. In August 2026, the IAASB also published proposed revisions to ISA 330, ISA 500 and ISA 520 to modernise requirements concerning audit evidence and risk responses in a technology-enabled environment. These proposals were still under consultation as of October 2026 and should not be treated as effective standards.

Under TSA 200, auditors must exercise professional skepticism throughout the audit. This involves maintaining a questioning mind, remaining alert to potentially contradictory evidence and critically assessing the reliability of audit evidence. The principle applies equally to information generated by employees, accounting systems, external specialists and AI applications. An AI-generated conclusion should not be accepted merely because it appears technically sophisticated, mathematically precise or supported by a persuasive explanation.

The first consideration is the reliability of the underlying data. Before relying on AI analysis, auditors should understand where the information originated, whether the dataset is complete and accurate, and whether the AI application has processed it correctly. For example, if AI identifies unusual revenue transactions using 50,000 sales invoices, the auditor should reconcile the dataset with the accounting records and verify that relevant transactions were not omitted, duplicated or incorrectly classified. Under TSA 500, evaluating the relevance and reliability of information used as audit evidence remains essential, regardless of the technology involved.

Auditors should also challenge the reasoning behind AI-generated conclusions. AI may identify a journal entry as suspicious because it was recorded near year-end, involves an unusual account combination or exceeds a predetermined amount. However, these characteristics do not automatically establish a misstatement or fraud. The auditor must examine supporting documents, understand the business purpose and determine whether the accounting treatment complies with applicable financial reporting standards. Conversely, transactions not flagged by AI should not automatically be assumed correct, because the model may fail to detect certain errors or fraud patterns.

A practical approach is to perform independent validation of AI outputs. Auditors may reperform selected calculations, trace findings to original documents, compare results with independent evidence and test both transactions flagged as unusual and transactions classified as normal. Testing the latter helps assess the risk of false negatives. Where AI produces unsupported references to accounting standards, contracts or external information, auditors should verify those references against authentic source documents rather than relying on generated quotations or summaries.

Consider a hypothetical company with 50,000 sales transactions. An AI system identifies 120 transactions as potentially involving incorrect revenue cut-off. The auditor should first verify the completeness of the transaction population, then inspect relevant invoices, delivery documents, customer acceptance records and contractual terms. If some flagged transactions are valid, the auditor should consider the reasons for these false positives. If testing of unflagged transactions reveals errors, the auditor should reassess the tool's detection reliability and whether additional procedures are necessary. Analysing an entire population with AI does not automatically provide sufficient appropriate audit evidence or eliminate the need for professional judgement.

AI-generated forecasts and accounting estimates require particular attention. Under TSA 540, auditors must evaluate the methods, significant assumptions and data supporting material accounting estimates. If AI concludes that goodwill impairment is unnecessary because projected EBITDA will increase significantly, auditors should independently examine historical forecast accuracy, revenue assumptions, operating margins, discount rates and external market conditions. A forecast that appears reasonable in an AI-generated report may still be based on unrealistic management assumptions. Similarly, AI-generated expected credit loss calculations should be assessed for data quality, customer risk segmentation and forward-looking assumptions.

An important distinction should also be made between AI used by management and AI used by the audit firm. Where management uses AI to prepare accounting estimates or reports, the auditor must evaluate the resulting information and relevant controls as part of the audit. Where the audit firm uses AI to perform audit procedures, the firm remains responsible for the suitability of its tools, the competence of engagement personnel and the quality of the conclusions reached. Under TSA 220 (Revised) and Thai quality management requirements, engagement partners cannot transfer professional responsibility to technology vendors or automated systems.

Documentation and confidentiality are equally important. Under TSA 230, audit documentation should enable an experienced auditor to understand the procedures performed, evidence obtained, significant judgements and conclusions reached. When AI is used for significant audit procedures, the engagement team should retain relevant information concerning the data, tool or model version, analytical purpose, results, exceptions investigated and independent validation. Audit firms should also control the use of confidential client information, particularly when considering public AI platforms or external service providers. The IESBA's technology-related ethical revisions, effective internationally from December 2024, reinforce the importance of professional competence, due care and confidentiality when using technology, subject to applicable local adoption.

For audit partners, the appropriate response is neither unrestricted reliance on AI nor a complete rejection of the technology. Firms should adopt risk-based procedures for evaluating and approving AI tools, training audit teams and establishing appropriate review requirements. AI can improve the identification of unusual transactions and strengthen analytical procedures, but significant conclusions must remain supported by independently evaluated evidence.

Conclusion
AI has the potential to improve audit quality by expanding analytical capabilities, processing complex information and identifying risks that traditional procedures might overlook. However, AI does not replace professional skepticism, sufficient appropriate audit evidence or the auditor's responsibility for forming an independent opinion.

The essential principle is that auditors should use AI to generate better questions, identify risks and strengthen audit procedures, but should never allow AI-generated answers to replace the critical evaluation of audit evidence. The future of audit quality depends not on choosing between human judgement and artificial intelligence, but on combining both within a reliable and accountable audit process.
