On August 21, 2026, the Federation of Accounting Professions of Thailand published an explanatory guide to TFRS 18, *Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements*. The guide is intended to help accountants, auditors, academics and other users understand the key presentation and disclosure principles of the new standard. Importantly, the Federation states that the explanatory guide itself is not part of the financial reporting standards; it is supporting material designed to make the requirements easier to understand and apply.
TFRS 18 is one of the most significant changes to the presentation of Thai financial statements in many years. It will replace TAS 1, *Presentation of Financial Statements*, and applies to annual reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2028, with earlier application permitted. The Thai effective date is one year later than IFRS 18 internationally, which becomes effective for annual periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027.
The first point accountants should understand is that TFRS 18 is primarily about how financial performance is presented and explained, rather than introducing a completely new recognition and measurement model. The Federation’s guide emphasises that TFRS 18 does not change the overall measurement of financial performance and does not, by itself, change the company’s total net profit. What may change substantially is where income and expenses appear, which subtotals are presented, and how management explains performance to users.
The most visible change will be the structure of the statement of profit or loss. TFRS 18 requires income and expenses to be classified into five categories: operating, investing, financing, income taxes and discontinued operations. The purpose is to create a more consistent structure so that users can compare financial performance across companies more easily.
For many non-financial companies, the operating category will contain income and expenses from the company’s main business activities as well as other income and expenses that do not belong in another specified category. The investing category generally captures returns from assets that generate returns largely independently of other resources, together with certain investments in associates, joint ventures and unconsolidated subsidiaries. The financing category focuses principally on income and expenses associated with financing liabilities. However, special considerations apply to entities such as banks, investment businesses and entities for which investing in assets or providing financing to customers is a main business activity.
This classification matters because TFRS 18 introduces more standardised subtotals in the statement of profit or loss. In particular, companies will generally present operating profit or loss, profit or loss before financing and income taxes, and profit or loss. This means that “operating profit” will no longer simply be a subtotal that each company can define largely according to its own presentation practice. Its position in the financial statements will be supported by the new classification principles.
This could materially change the appearance of a company’s income statement even when net profit remains exactly the same. For example, interest income, foreign-exchange differences, gains and losses on investments, income from associates, lease-related interest and other items may need to be reconsidered to determine which category they belong to. Finance teams should therefore not think of TFRS 18 as merely changing the layout of a financial statement template. It requires a detailed mapping of the chart of accounts and an understanding of the economic nature of each significant income and expense stream.
A second major change concerns how operating expenses are presented. Companies may present expenses by nature, by function, or use a combination if that provides the most useful structured summary. However, where expenses are presented by function—for example, cost of sales, selling expenses and administrative expenses—the new requirements increase transparency about important expenses by nature. The Federation’s guide identifies five particularly important categories: depreciation, amortisation, employee benefits, impairment losses and reversals, and inventory write-downs and reversals.
This can have a significant systems implication. A company may currently be able to produce “cost of sales” and “administrative expenses” from the general ledger, but may not easily identify how much depreciation or employee cost is embedded in each function. Under TFRS 18, finance teams may need more granular information and stronger cost-allocation processes. Companies should therefore examine their chart of accounts, cost centres, consolidation systems and reporting packages well before the effective date.
A third important area is aggregation and disaggregation. TFRS 18 strengthens the principle that items sharing similar characteristics should be grouped together, while items with different characteristics should be separated when the information is material. It also discourages uninformative labels such as “other” when a more meaningful description is available. The objective is to prevent material information from becoming obscured inside large miscellaneous balances.
The fourth—and potentially most important change for listed companies—is the introduction of disclosures for management-defined performance measures, or MPMs. These are certain subtotals of income and expenses used in public communications to communicate management’s view of an aspect of the company’s overall financial performance but which are not specified by accounting standards. Examples may include measures such as “adjusted operating profit” or another company-specific adjusted profit measure, depending on whether the measure meets the definition in TFRS 18.
This is significant because performance measures that may previously have appeared primarily in investor presentations, earnings releases or management commentary can now create disclosure requirements within the financial statements. For each qualifying measure, the company must explain what aspect of performance it communicates and why management believes the measure is useful, explain how it is calculated, and reconcile it to the most directly comparable subtotal required by the accounting standards. The reconciliation also includes the income-tax effect and the effect on non-controlling interests of the reconciling items.
This will require much stronger governance over adjusted performance measures. CFOs should identify which measures are being communicated publicly, who approves the definitions, how adjustments are calculated, whether definitions remain consistent from year to year, and whether the same information can be reproduced from controlled accounting data. A measure used repeatedly in investor communications can no longer be viewed simply as a presentation created by Investor Relations if it falls within the TFRS 18 definition.
TFRS 18 also affects the cash flow statement through consequential amendments to TAS 7. The Federation’s guide explains that, for the indirect method, operating profit or loss becomes the starting point and that previous presentation choices concerning interest and dividends are changed. Companies should therefore review not only the income statement but also their cash-flow mapping and consolidation process.
The transition requirements make early preparation particularly important. TFRS 18 requires retrospective application. For a calendar-year company first applying TFRS 18 for the year ending December 31, 2028, this means that comparative information for 2027 will also need to be presented under the new requirements. Companies that wait until 2028 to start the project may therefore discover that the historical information necessary to reconstruct the comparative presentation is difficult to obtain.
The practical implementation project should therefore begin well before January 2028. Finance teams should map existing income and expense accounts into the new categories, identify judgments over operating, investing and financing classification, assess how expenses by nature can be extracted, review all publicly communicated performance measures, redesign relevant financial statement notes, evaluate the impact on the cash flow statement, and determine how 2027 comparative information will be captured.
Listed companies should also coordinate Accounting, FP&A, Investor Relations, Legal and the Audit Committee because management performance measures may originate outside the traditional financial reporting process.
For auditors, TFRS 18 creates new areas of audit attention even though it does not necessarily change the company’s net profit. Classification errors can materially distort operating profit or other subtotals while leaving bottom-line profit unchanged. Auditors will need to understand management’s classification judgments, test the completeness and accuracy of information supporting expense disclosures, evaluate controls over management-defined performance measures and examine the retrospective re-presentation of comparative information. The audit risk will therefore increasingly include how performance is portrayed, not only whether total profit is mathematically correct.
The August 21, 2026 explanatory guide is therefore useful not simply as reading material for accountants preparing for a future standard. It is an early signal for companies to begin implementation. TFRS 18 becomes mandatory for annual periods beginning on or after January 1, 2028, but for many companies the data, systems and comparative-period work effectively begin during 2027 or even earlier.
In summary, TFRS 18 does not principally rewrite how companies recognise revenue, assets or liabilities. Instead, it changes the architecture through which financial performance is communicated. Operating profit becomes more standardised, income and expenses are organised into defined categories, expense information becomes more transparent, management-defined performance measures move closer to the audited financial statements, and aggregation and disaggregation receive greater discipline. The number at the bottom of the income statement may remain the same—but the story that users see on the way to that number may look very different.
