On 14 August 2026, AICPA & CIMA published Accounting Research & AI: New Challenges & Opportunities for Financial Reporting Judgments, a report from the Center for Plain English Accounting addressing the growing use of artificial intelligence in accounting and audit research. The publication noted that a poll conducted during the AICPA Engage Conference showed that one of the broadest uses of AI among participants was assistance with audit and accounting research. AICPA recognised the significant ability of AI to locate and synthesise information, while at the same time highlighting the risk of excessive reliance on its output and biases such as sycophancy, where an AI system tends to respond in a manner that agrees with or reinforces the user’s framing. (AICPA & CIMA)

The issue is increasingly important because accounting research is particularly well suited to generative AI. Modern accounting standards are extensive, technically complex and spread across standards, interpretations, implementation guidance and other supporting materials. AI can search large amounts of information within seconds, identify potentially relevant requirements, summarise lengthy guidance and help accountants structure an initial analysis. Used appropriately, it can materially reduce the time spent locating information.

The professional risk arises when speed of retrieval is confused with reliability of conclusion. An AI-generated answer may appear complete, technically sophisticated and professionally written even when an important part of the analysis is incorrect or missing. Accounting judgments frequently depend not on identifying a general rule, but on determining whether a particular exception, definition or condition applies to the specific facts. A response that is substantially correct but omits one critical requirement can therefore be more dangerous than an obviously incorrect answer because it creates confidence that the research has already been completed.

This creates what may be described as judgment risk. AI does not merely have the potential to provide incorrect information; it can influence the direction of professional judgment before the accountant has independently evaluated the issue. The way a question is framed can materially affect the response. Asking whether an implementation fee should be recognised immediately is different from asking AI to explain why the fee should be recognised immediately. The latter already contains a preferred conclusion, and a system that tends to accommodate the user may generate arguments supporting that conclusion rather than independently challenging whether the underlying premise is appropriate. AICPA’s August 2026 publication specifically identifies sycophancy as one of the biases that should be considered when AI is used for professional research. (AICPA & CIMA)

This matters because difficult accounting questions rarely have answers that can be derived from a single paragraph of a standard. Revenue recognition, business combinations, financial instruments, leases, impairment, deferred tax and other judgmental areas require an understanding of the economic substance of the transaction, identification of the applicable literature, consideration of definitions and exceptions, evaluation of alternative treatments and application of professional judgment to the facts. AI can assist throughout this process, but it does not eliminate the need for the process itself.

A fundamental professional principle should therefore remain unchanged: AI is not an authoritative accounting source. If an AI system identifies an accounting treatment under IFRS, TFRS or US GAAP, the final position should still be supported by the applicable authoritative literature. The accounting memorandum should be capable of explaining which requirements apply, how the relevant facts satisfy or fail those requirements, what alternative views were considered and why management reached its conclusion. “The AI concluded that…” is not an appropriate substitute for technical accounting analysis.

This principle is consistent with AICPA guidance issued earlier in 2026. In March 2026, AICPA issued Technical Questions and Answers Section 400.02, Using the Output of Technology, emphasising that professional judgment remains necessary when determining whether output produced by technology is appropriate for its intended purpose. (AICPA & CIMA) AICPA & CIMA’s April 2026 discussion of ethics and AI similarly emphasised verification of AI-generated information, appropriate oversight, awareness of technological limitations and preservation of professional competence. (AICPA & CIMA) Taken together, these publications support a consistent principle: technology can assist professional work, but responsibility for the conclusion remains with the professional.

A more robust approach to AI-assisted accounting research is therefore to treat AI as an accelerator and challenger rather than as the final decision maker. The research process should begin with an understanding of the transaction itself. The accountant should identify what has occurred economically, what rights and obligations were created and which accounting question genuinely requires resolution. AI may then be used to identify potentially relevant literature, terminology and areas requiring further investigation.

The next step is critical: the accountant should return to the authoritative source. If AI identifies a paragraph in an accounting standard, that paragraph should be read in its original context. If the system refers to an interpretation or amendment, the original document, effective date and transition requirements should be verified. If AI summarises a complex principle, the accountant should determine whether qualifications or exceptions have been omitted. The professional conclusion should therefore remain traceable from the facts of the transaction to the authoritative guidance and ultimately to the accounting treatment.

For material judgments, a useful research trail may be viewed conceptually as:
Facts → Accounting issue → Authoritative literature → Analysis → Alternatives considered → Professional judgment → Conclusion.
AI can support several points in that chain, but it should not replace the chain or become the only evidence connecting the accounting issue to the final conclusion.

AI can also be used more constructively by asking it to challenge rather than confirm the accountant’s preliminary view. If management believes development expenditure should be capitalised, for example, asking AI to explain why capitalisation is appropriate may simply reinforce the existing view. A stronger approach is to ask what requirements could prevent capitalisation, what evidence may be missing and what alternative accounting treatment should be considered. The resulting arguments can then be evaluated against the authoritative standard and the actual facts.

Used this way, AI may strengthen rather than weaken professional judgment because it can help identify counterarguments, missing facts and alternative interpretations that the accountant might otherwise overlook. The purpose is not to allow AI to make the decision, but to use it as an additional source of challenge before the professional reaches the decision.

The extent of independent verification should also be proportionate to the significance of the accounting matter. Using AI to assist with a routine accounting question presents a different level of risk from relying on AI when analysing a complex revenue contract, determining whether an acquisition constitutes a business, assessing goodwill impairment, evaluating a lease modification, analysing a financial instrument or assessing recognition of a deferred tax asset. As materiality, complexity and judgment increase, the need to verify authoritative literature, document alternatives and obtain appropriate review should also increase.
There is also a longer-term professional concern. If accountants, particularly those early in their careers, routinely ask AI for the answer before attempting to understand the accounting literature themselves, they may become increasingly efficient at producing technical documents while becoming less capable of performing independent technical analysis. AICPA & CIMA’s broader 2026 ethics discussion recognises the importance of maintaining professional competence when AI-powered tools are used. (AICPA & CIMA)

Historically, accountants developed judgment by reading difficult standards, analysing ambiguous facts, comparing interpretations and discussing conclusions with experienced professionals. Some of this work is slow, but the intellectual difficulty itself contributes to professional development. If AI removes all of that difficulty, organisations need to ensure that learning is not removed with it. The objective should therefore be to automate unnecessary searching, not to eliminate the processes through which accountants learn to interpret, challenge and exercise judgment.

This has implications for AI governance within accounting firms and finance functions. Organisations should distinguish between using AI to locate potentially relevant literature, summarise documents, organise research questions, identify alternative interpretations or assist in drafting, and allowing AI output to become the final authority for a material accounting conclusion. The former activities can improve efficiency considerably. The latter creates a significant governance and professional risk.

Reviewers should consequently focus less on whether AI was used and more on whether the underlying research remains professionally defensible. A controller, CFO, accounting technical partner or auditor should be able to determine what accounting issue was considered, which authoritative requirements support the conclusion, whether the original sources were reviewed, whether exceptions and alternative treatments were considered, whether the prompt itself may have biased the AI response and whether an experienced professional could understand the reasoning without needing access to the AI conversation.

If those elements are present, AI may materially improve the efficiency of accounting research without weakening its quality. If they are absent, the problem is not simply that AI was used; the more fundamental problem is that professional judgment has effectively been delegated to the technology.

The significance of AICPA & CIMA’s 14 August 2026 publication therefore lies not in suggesting that accountants should stop using AI for accounting research. On the contrary, the technology has clear potential to improve the speed with which accountants locate, organise and analyse information. The more important message is that faster research does not change the fundamental requirements of professional accounting judgment. (AICPA & CIMA)

AI can help identify the relevant question, locate possible guidance, summarise complex material and challenge an initial conclusion. What it should not do is become the authority that decides the accounting treatment.

The practical principle is therefore straightforward:
Use AI to accelerate accounting research, but verify the authoritative literature, challenge the AI’s reasoning and retain professional responsibility for the final judgment.
The future of accounting research is unlikely to be a choice between accountants and AI. It will increasingly depend on whether accountants can use AI to become better researchers without allowing the convenience of an immediate answer to weaken the quality of their professional judgment.

Accounting Research & AI: New Challenges & Opportunities for Financial Reporting Judgments

Using the Output of Technology
